Chief Richard Stoltenborg is a Ridgefield native and attended Slocum Skewes School until his family relocated to Paramus. Chief Stoltenborg continued to have ties to Ridgefield where his family has always worked or owned businesses in town. His grandfather Richard “Dick” Stoltenborg owned and operated Dicks Coffee Shop on Hendricks Causeway for over 4 decades. His parents also ran a coffee shop for many years and one of his brother's is employed by a Ridgefield business. While attending college in Ohio, Chief Stoltenborg took the police exam and was appointed to the Ridgefield Police Department in January 1981. Graduated from the Bergen County police Academy and was assigned to the patrol division and his training officer was Andrew O'Brien Sr.
In 1989 he was assigned to the Detective Bureau. In 1996 Chief Stoltenborg was promoted to Sergeant and remained in the Detective Bureau. In 2000 was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was named officer in charge of the Detective Bureau. During his Detective Bureau assignment, Chief Stoltenborg was assigned to the Bergen County Prosecutors Office Narcotic Task Force on two separate occasions as well as other task forces. In 2002 Chief Stoltenborg was promoted to the rank of Captain and was assigned as the administrative officer of the Police Department after the retirement of Deputy Chief O'Brien. In 2006 he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief and remained as the administrative officer of the Police Department under Chief John Bogovich. In July 2007 he was promoted to Chief of Police of the department.
Chief Stoltenborg has attended many schools, training classes and seminars throughout his career as well as the Federal Law Enforcement Executive Development School at Princeton University. Chief Stoltenborg is very proud of his past service to the borough of Ridgefield and is excited about the future. Chief Stoltenborg is looking forward to lead the very professional and well trained police officers that Ridgefield Police Department is comprised of. Chief Stoltenborg oversees a department of 74 personnel which includes 27 Police Officers, Special police, Paid and Per-Diem Community Service Officers (EMT's),School Crossing Guards, Police Records and Administrative Assistant.
The Chief believes in having an open door policy and is working towards building a better relationship between the Police and the community and strongly believes in community policing. Chief Stoltenborg has served as a past president of PBA Local 330 and coached the Ridgefield Stars 8th Grade football team (who went on to win the NJ State football championship their senior year.) Chief Stoltenborg also serves as a Trustee on the board of the NJ/NY Law Enforcement Asian American Advisory Committee which concentrates on improving relations between the police and the Asian community.
Chief Stoltenborg has many interests outside the police department and is passionate about sports, particularly the Mets, the Giants and Rangers and enjoys playing golf. His real passion however is boxing. Chief Stoltenborg has been a volunteer amateur boxing coach for over 15 years and is associated with the Dover Boxing Club in Dover New Jersey. He has coached in the Golden Gloves, State Championships, and Regional tournaments and at the International level. He has coached many amateur champions. In addition, he is licensed as a Professional Boxing Manager and “Second” and currently manages some professional boxers.
